ABOUT WD Ultrastar DC HC550 16TB SATA Enterprise HDD
Data center decisions are governed by the TCO. With 16TB and 18TB, the Ultrastar DC HC550 takes the lead in reducing TCO. Data center decisions are governed by the TCO. High-capacity hard drives play a major role in reducing TCO. An 18TB data center internal hard drive provides 29% more capacity in the same form factor as a 14TB HDD.
High-capacity HDDs enable data centers to reduce CapEx by reducing the cost of ancillary hardware and system level compared to low-capacity drives. Helium-sealed, low-power, high-reliability drives reduce energy and maintenance costs and contribute to OpEx savings. For example, a data center using an 18TB HDD versus a 14TB HDD may require 22% fewer racks, while at idle consumes 21% less power per TB, resulting in a significant overall need for data center environments. TCO is decreased.
The Ultrastar DC HC550 integrates a suite of technologies on a 9-disc platform to create a new class of HDDs. The 18TB capacity is achieved by combining technologies that improve working area density combined with technologies that improve performance and reduce power consumption.
FEATURES:
- The first internal hard drive in the industry to use Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) technology to improve write capacity and therefore increase field density.
- The industry’s first Triple Stage Actuator (TSA) enhances head-positioning accuracy, provides superior performance, and increased field density.
- HelioSeal technology is the foundation of Western Digital’s high-capacity HDDs and is the sixth generation of the HelioSeal product.

- One MB (megabyte) is equal to one million bytes, one GB (one gigabyte) is equal to 1,000 MB (one billion bytes), and one TB (terabyte) is equal to 1,000 GB.
- The MTBF and AFR specifications are based on a sample population and are estimated by statistical measurement and acceleration algorithms under specific operating conditions for this
- drive model. MTBF and AFR ratings do not predict the reliability of individual drives and do not constitute a warranty.
- Advanced Format Drive: 4K (4096-byte) physical seconds
- The 512e model can be converted to 4Kn format and vice versa.
- A portion of the buffer capacity is used to drive firmware
- Peak value. Actual performance may vary. 1MiB = 1,048,576 Bytes (220), 1MB = 1,000,000 Bytes (106)
